Free Movement has highlighted how the International Aid budget is being diverted from projects abroad and being used to fund asylum accomodation in UK hotels. This now accounts for one-third of the budget, which had already been controversially reduced from its previous level.

Spiralling asylum costs are largely due to the use of hotels for new asylum arrivals. According to the BBC, the companies owning the hotels are charging inflated prices, and have posted substantially increased profits as a result.

Most recently, 2021 to 2023 has seen the UK government propose measures designed explicitly to deter people from seeking asylum in the UK. The Independent reports that the government has given up trying to send some asylum seekrs to Rwanda. Asylum lawyers are saying that a number of 'notices of intent' have been withdrawn, allowing those seeking asylum into the UK asylum system.

An article in the Guardian reveals that the Home Office has introduced a course for immigration staff which encourages them to show more empathy. The Post-Windrush training module urges caseworkers to call asylum seekers ‘customers’.

The Guardian also reports that UN special rapporteurs have warned the Uk government that asylum seeker children placed in hotels, many of whom have gone missing, face a real risk of being trafficked.
